At the annual meeting of Mataroa Sheep Dog Trials Club, the following office-bearers were elected: Patron, Mr H. Ji. Stedman; President, Mr J. McHardy; secretary, Mr J. Scott; treasurer, Mr W. J. The dates for 1923 dog trials were fixed for July 19, 20 and 21, events to be run same as last year, with exception that time lor the huntaway class was extended to 14 minutes. Cr. William Oldfield was granted leave of absence at the Marton Borough Council meeting on Monday evening. Cr. Oldfield is at present an inmate of Wanganui Hospital, where ho underwent an operation fo’’ appendicitis on Friday, and his friends will be pleased to hear that he is making good progress. GOLF. MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. The council met on Monday evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell), and Crs A. H. Bill J. A. Bush, W. Price, R. J, Moore, H. Y. Cameron, J. Mogridge and J. Hunter. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was dealt with as follows: R. G. Witney complaining of storm water entering his premises on Ross Street.—Received. The secretary of the Wellington Fire Underwriters’ Association wrote stating that the council’s request to place Marton under the E schedule was being considered. —Received. The Minister of Labour wrote advising that Wednesday had been I gazetted the statutory closing day for the half-holiday of the Marton borough.—Received. The District- Engineer of New Zealand Railways tvrote asking that the agreement to maintain the lighting at Marton Junction Railway Station be extended for three months from Juno I.—Received. From Frank Brice, quoting rates for a public risk proposal of insurance covering Marton Town Hall.— It was resolved to take out a policy for £3OO for seating accommodation of 700 at £2 12s 6d a year, the picture lessee to pay half. The gas manager (Mr A. Wilkins) submitted the following cost of laying a two-inch galvanised gas main on Wanganui Road, 25 chains, twoinch pipe, £ll4 ss; tees and joints, £5 18s; labour, £3B; total, £158. The report was held over.

STRIKING OF RATES. It was resolved: “That the Marton Borough Council will, at a special meeting of the council to be held on Monday, June 25, 1923, at 7.30 p.m., make and levy the following rates for the period commencing April 1, 1923, and ending March 31, 1924:—■ 1. A general rate under section 77 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, and “The Rating Act, 1908,” of 4Jd in the pound sterling. 2. A Library rate under section 91 of “’The Municipal Corporations Act, 1920,” of 1-6111 of a penny in the pound sterling. 3. A hospital and charitable aid rate under section 29 of “The Hospital and Charitable Aid Institutions Act, 1908,” of 5-Bths of a penny in the pound sterling. 4. A water rate under section 84 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1920,” of l-12th of a penny in the pound sterling on all rateable lands and dwelling-houses within the borough to which water is supplied; minimum rate 10s. On all buildings other than dwelling-houses to which water is supplied, a rate not exceeding one-half of the aforementioned water rate, viz,, l-24th of a penny in the pound sterling. Each of the above rates is to be levied on the rateable value on the valuation roll of all the rateable property within the Borough of Marton on the basis of the unimproved value.

In addition to the above rates, special rates for the purpose of providing interest and sinking fund and other charges will be levied upon the rateable properties within the respective rating areas upon which ths several special loans are secured. All the above rates shall be payable in one sum on Monday, July 2, 1923, at the Borough Council office, High street, jMarton. The valuaticji roil and rate book containing particulars of all the above rates are open for public inspection at the said office during office hours.
