THE V.R.C. GRAND NATIONALS MELBOURNE, May 28. In the weights for the Grand National Steeplechase Mountain God with 13 stone is at the top of the list. Spook ha s 10.3 and Kohu 9.13. In the Grand National Hurdles Tardule 11.5 is at the top. All Aboard has 11.3, Chrysostum 10.8, and Beltane 10.7.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Early Bird.” Napier nominations are due on Friday night. The Auckland, Otaki and Dunedin meetings commence on Saturday. The Wanganui sportsman, Mr G. G. Hill, has purchased from Mrs Blair, of Papanui, a filly foal by Logan Pointer—Sylvia (dam of Blair Audubon), at a substantial figure. Mi- J. Kemp missed the nominations for the Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern meeting, and he may journey South to the Otaki meeting with Lady Merriwee, which is engaged at that fixture.

Tarleton and Royal Box have re sumed work again at Cambridge un der the supervision of their owner, Mr G. L. Stead. The former has completely lost the cold which came against him in Australia, and the latter is fast getting back into racing trim. The former should be a useful three-year-old.

Since going to Riccarton, Red Cent lias made many friends, and if sent to Dunedin for the cross country events he will be a well supported candidate. Last he looked anything but seasoned, he Showed very good form, winning the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase.

Thd movement to have an qxtra day’s racing at Trentham in JUly, when Welcome Week will be held, has been successful. The Wellington Racing Club has been granted an extra permit for July 7. The other two days are the 11th and 14th, so that 'the meeting will now extend over a week. OnThe first day, which is a Saturday, the big attraction will be the Wellington Steeplechase, on the second day the Hurdlds or Parliamentary Handicap, and on the third day the July Steeplechase, The weather was fine at Trentham on Saturday morning for training operations, but the tracks were very heavy. The sand was the only track open, except for horses engaged at Otaki, who had the use of the new grass track. It was heavy, and the going very holding.

Blackmail, '“commencing at the teven furlong post, was joined by Solfanello at the six furlong peg. The gelding seemed to find difficulty in getting going on the heavy track. They finished on terms. Blackmail took Irnin 37sccs. for the full journey, the six furlongs being run in Imin 24sec.

Martinique was given strong pace work.

Bavana (R. Reed) galloped six furlongs il'i. Imiu 25Jsec., the last half mile taking 59 secDominant (A. Reed) galloped seveu furlongs, Maunu, with his trainer up, joining in over the last five. Maunu was stopping over the last bit, and Dominant, who had been going nicely, was eased up to him, the time in consequence being slow, Imin 4 3see. for the seveu furlongs, and Imin 15sec for the five furlongs. Petunia had nothing to spare from Bonnie Friend at the end of half a mile, run in 54secs. The Boniform mare was evidently well suited by the heavy going, for she had a good weight up. Quest (H. Wheeler) was given a round at strong three-quarter pace, and was anxious to increase it all the way. He is to fulfil his engagement in the Raukawa Cup, Wheeler having the mount. Militaire was given a round at a steady pace, brushing home over the last half-mile. A lot of other horses were given steady work. On the sand Strafhpan and Proclaim ran five furlongs in Imin Bsecs. Proclaim (Provocation —Sunfish), is in J. Ayres’ charge, and he has recently been schooled over the hurdles, shaping well. He is a solid-looking gelding that should make good at the gijme. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES SOME GOOD SCHOOLING WORK. Although dull and threatening the weather cleared splendidly as the morning advanced, and the work at Ellerslie was got through without any rain (says Saturday’s Auckland Star). * The tasks on the flat weru aot of a very startling order, the saud and No. 2 grass tracks being the ones available, but there was a lot ot good schooling work, no less than a dozen horses going over the hill. The hurdles were up on the outside of the course proper, and several lots were schooled there, while the brush hurdles in the centre of the course were also in use. The work recorded on No. 2 grass track was as follows: Comical was the first one timed, but was not doing his best to cover six furlongs in 1.25.

Doleful Ditty did useful work, running home half a mile at a good three-quarter pace. Boomerday was going easier than Peter Maxwell at the end of six furlongs run in 1.25 1-5. Mangawherq alone sprinted five furlongs in 1.13 4-5. Salvor traversed a round in 2.1 3-5.

Golden Bubble did steady work, sprinting down the straight. Bitholia was too good for Pine Arch over six furlongs in 1.23. Soulterina easily beat Esplanade over a round, Gold Plane bringing her home over the last six furlongs, the round taking 1.58. Arch Salute was a long way in front of Bute Sound at the end of a six-furlong gallop run in 1.22 4-5, Bute Sound taking 1.23 1-5. Tactful pleased better than Jolly Princess over six furlongs in 1.22 2-5.

Praiseworthy, Bright Gift, and Golden Locket, the latter of which got left, was the order of the trio at the end of six furlongs, Gold Queen bringing them home over the last four. Praiseworthy taking 1.23 for the journey. John Dix spurted four furlongs in 55 2-5.

Lady Merriwee was a length in front of Cool Stimulants at the end of a similar journey in 55seoe. Marble . Glass beat Quaestor over four furlongs in 55 2-ssecs. The following gallops were on the sand:—

Broadwood was- first to use the sand, galloping seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5.

Pebble 11. and Musketoon did a similar task, taking 1.36. Comedy Prince and Poteen were together at the end of a round in 210.

Importer spurted four furlongs, the last three taking 44secsv Oakleigh and Paonui ran a mile and a quarter, the round taking 2.7 2-5, with the latter going the easie'r of the pair at the finish.

Eu Route and Penury Rose in particular pleasing.'

•General Advance (Fielding) and Orauga (Henderson) were companions over the tour hurdles on the course proper. General Advance fenced slowly over the first two obstacles, but over the last two.

Hokemai (T. Chaplin) and Gay Bobbie (Barrow-) were sent over the crush hurdles. Gay Bobbie fell at the lence by the six furlong post, ana Hokemai nnished the task alone.

Oakland (Dillamore) and Sir Wai (Corle.t) were sent over five hurdles on the course proper, Great Fun (Woods) and Mumble (Barrow) joining in over the last four. The quartet all fenced well, Mumble and Great Fun being well ahead of Sir Wai at the finish, with Oakland last. Thiganthu (J. Preston), Economic (N. Rowe),-and Vociferate (E, Rae) were sent over the big country, going over the hill. Economic stopped at the second fence on the hill, and afterwards fell at the second fence of the double, and his display was very poor. Thiganthu and Vociferate both jumped well. Pittsworth (S. Walls), Silverton (D. OShea), Kohu (Dillamore), Tigerland (McSweeney), No Bother (Barrow), Kopaka (R. Wood), and Myall King (Chapiin) were companions over a round of the big country, starting below the sod wall. The whole nine gave a good exhibition of jumping, although Tigerland hit the second fence of the double pretty hard. No Bother, JSilverton, Kohu and Tigerland all had turns in the lead, but crossing the stone wall, the last obstacle, Pittsworth was just in front of Silverton and Kohu. with Tigerland, No Bother, Dick, Kopaka and Ivlyall King finishing in that order.
