Neither <f the players were St the top of their form, Saunders being quite off, and only showing a glimpse of his powe.s at intervals. O’Callaghan won by 3 up and 2 to play. He won the first, third, fiftn. seventh, ninth, tenth and fourteenth, while Saunders scored at the fourth, eighth, twelfth and thirteenth holes Both men drove well, with Saundris showing a little more consistency. Ju iron play, through the fairway, O’Cmllaghan was erratic and not at aJI sure of his clubs. But short approaches and good putting enabled him to recover. Saunders lost a hole or two through indifferent putting. O’Callaghan. won the first hole with a nioe 4. The second was halved in 7. The visitor, with a 5. won the third, aud then Saunders had his turn, witu a. 3, and won the fourth. O Callaghan won the fifth. Two up Saunders was on the sixth with the wood and an iron, then 3 putts for 5. O’Ctillaghan halved with drive, spoon, chip shot, and 2 putts. Both players had weak drive* at the Quarry. Both «econd shots were good, especially Saunders’ with an iron. After two very weak inashies, he failed to reach the green. O’Callaghan hok*d ii» 4 after a useful short green. O’Callaghan holed in 4 after a useful short approach. 3 up. At “Lands End.” Saunders reached the green in 2 with another good iron shot. Down in 4. O’Callaghan, not trusting to iron play, again took the spoon, for his second, but topped and was short. Two up. At “Seaview ” the new hole, 0 Callaghan was down in ? i ® aun<^ere short on his first, us<-d “the spade,” hut without success. Hawera, 3 up. Saunders lost an opportunity to halve at “ Ix»r.g Tom” by taking 3 putts. Hawera. 4up Terawhiti anw Saurders hole high, but in the bunker. With 2 shots to get out, and two putts, he halved with O’Callaghan, whose first went out to the right. Saunders’ iron at “Alum” and at ‘ Encampment,’ where his seoinc was a beautiful deck shot. At “Freu<h Pass” he again used thecleek, “a fnend o! many years' standing.” and was in the green. Three putts for a half end O Callaghan still 3 up. The fifteenth .was halved in 5. Saunders was fighting desperately to save defeat ; his second at Cabbage free, ar. iron, finding the edge of the green. Down in 4. O’CnL laghan topped the second with his iron i ecovered with a beautiful mashie anc sunk a six foot putt for a lialf. O’Callaghan wins, 3 up. Ihe above match was played on flte new course and was fjund to be in excellent order. The fairway was good I and the greens played I’cmarkably well. . j MATCHES NEXT MONDAY.
