INCREASE IN'UNEMPLOYMEN (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. May 21. The recent floods in North Canterbury have been responsible for an increase in the number of applications tor work received by the unemployment branch of the Labour Department. Last week’s registrations totalled 125, ibe majority of the unemployed being labourers. “Since the flood started, between 400 and 500 men have called in search of work.” stated a member of the Railway District Engineer’s staff. “We have placed many. We possibly could have placed more but the trouble is accommodation.” He added that all the available huts were being brought into use.
