WAVERLEY NOTES

The annual smoke concert o£ the Waverley U.S.A, was held in the supper room of the Town Hall on ..cunesday evening, May 10. Mr a. J. Adlam, J.P. (chairman of Town Board) occupied the chair, supported uy Mr C. E. Johnston (President of the U.S.A.), and about 70 were present. A strong committee, with Mr Jas. Bourke as secretary, had the arrangements well in hand, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Amongst those present were Messrs J. K. Corrigan, M.P., Alex. Howie (Maori War veteran), J. E. Palmer (town clerk), G. Aiken (President, Dog Trial Club), W. Watkins (President, Hille Club), and several Hawera members of the R.S.A. Apologies were received from Messrs A. E. Symes and G. H. Graham. The following toast list was gone through: “The King,” proposed by the chairman; “The Army, Navy and Air Forces,” proposed by Mr Alex. Howie, Mr J. R. Corrigan replying; "R.S.A.”, proposed by the chairman, Messrs C. E. Johnston (local President) and Gorton (ex-President of South Taranaki U.S.A.), replying. “Patriotic Society," proposed by Mr Catanach, Mr H. W. James (secretary, local association), replying. "Sports and Pastimes," proposed by Mr L. E. Palmer, Mr W. H. Watkins (President, Rifle Club), replying; “Local Bodies,” proposed by Mr Harold Dickie, replied to by the chairman; “The Visitors,” proposed by Mr Kingsford, Messrs Duncan and James (Hawera), replying; “The Ladies,” proposed by Mr G. Aiken, Messrs Jeffrey and B. Boyne replying; “The Press,” proposed by Mr Shipton, Mr J. R. Patton replying; “The Performers,” proposed by Mr C. E. Johnston; “The Chairman,” proposed by Mr C. E. Johnston, the chairman replying; “The Secretary,” proposed by Mr McCall, Mr Bourke replying. The following contributed to the programme: Songs, Messrs Sherbourne( 2), Turner, Sturrick (2), Duncan (Hawera), Kingsford, J. R. Corrigan; recitations, Mr Langsdown and Mr James (Hawera). Mr A. G. Wallace acted as accompanist.
