THE BRIDGE BOOT FACTORY, TAYLORVILLE

It has always boon a matter of wonder why the manufacture of boots anfi shoes has never been attempted 5n Wanganui. There appears no reaeen for the fact and apparently Mr W. H.« Bird is of that opinion, as be has just commenced doing that very thing, ard has installed piite a complete plant for the purpose. Our representative paid a visit to the factory and was surprised to find so much variety of work m progress. Here is quite a large number of dies for stamping out the various pieces of which the soles and heels are made ; rollers for hardening the leather ; various sewing machines for different purposes; lasts of the latest shaprs, newly imported; machines for trimming. skiving, scouring, buffing, polishing, punching, etc., and a busy staff, engaged in making a variety of different lines. Although the present plant is the most complete in Wanganui, there are further additions in the form of expensive machines, lasts, dies, and ether equipment now on tbe way, the arrival of which will make possible the manufacture of all the finer lines and smart shapes of ladies’ goods. Our representative was shown one line in particular which the firm is specialising in, viz., a farmers’ beet. Mr Bird says “ there is no earthly reason why a man should drag round a heavy wator-logged boot, just because he lives in tlie country.” This boot is light, neat, watertight, and as solid and strong as a light boot can be made. It’s a guaranteed boot., too, an the guarantee is “fair wear, or another pair.’' This guarantee, in fact, applies to everything turned out. The pre-sent premises have b*»n twice enlarged, but are too small, and plans are being prepared for a larger building for another site. It is always a pleasure to see th** establishment of a fresh industry in our town, and we trust the firm will meet the reward tbe venture deserves *
