DOMINION’S IDLE LANDS
NEED FOR OPENING UP. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, May 17. The need for active measures in the settlement of the idle lands of the Do ’ minion was affirmed at a meeting of representatives of civic, commercial, irsdustrial and farming interests. ]t whh resolved . “It is imperative that the Government make one of the first planks to open up Crown and other idle lands, and that it is justified in raising as much money as may be available for this purpose in terms of the Empire Settlement Act. It was also decided to form a. permanent association of delegates to promote settlement. Delegates wore instructed to obtain the views of various organisations on a proposal to request the Government, to call a Dominion conference of various interests, at which a comprehensive scheme of immigration and Land eettlement should be formulated. Mr Maasey to take steps to put the scheme m operation during his visit to England.
