STEAMER ON FIRE

INCIPIENT FIRE ON ADMIRAL CODRINGTON. [Per Press Association.] GISBORNE, May 16. An incipient fire on the steamer Admiral Codrington in the roadstead yesterday afternoon was fortunately discovered and suppressed before much damage was done. The sawdust backing to the ventilator of No. 1 hatch, adjacent to a heating stove in the foreastle, was gutted and burned through the cork insulating plug over the hold.

The fire was discovered when the freezing engineer was going the rounds. The thermometer indicated a rise in temperature. The fire was extinguished with wet sacks, no damage being done beyond a few carcases of beef being spoiled by ashes. Had water been used extensive damage would have been done to the cargo.
