OBITUARY.

MR JOHN STEVENSON. It is with sincere regret we have to announce the death of Mr John Stevenson, who passed away at his residence last evening. Mr Stevenson was one of Wanganui’s oldest and most respected residents. Ho and his brother, the late Mr J. L. Stevenson, arrived in Wanganui from Scotland in 1855. wh< n quite small boys, and they spent tho whole of their lives here. They were wonderful comrades, and their separation has been brief. Mr John Stevenson was educated in Wanganui, and ou leaving school joined the staff of tho Hank of New Zealand. In 1879 h<transferred to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., rising to the position of manager, which he hold; till he retired Jess than a year ago. H<j was a prominent figure in the mercantile life of ’Wanganui and the Dominion, and was always found pushing industries and undertakings having tor their object the welfare of the district. He was a director of the Wanganui Freezing Company, and one of the principal shareholders in the Castlecliff Kailway Company. He was interested in public affairs, ho did not seek public positions. Among the positions he held was a seat on tho Wanganui River Trust, and he was au active member of the-Cbamber of Commerce. Mr Stevenson was one of th” original members of the Wanganui Golf Club, and was a keen player till quite recently. In Masonic lite, the deoccupied a high position. He was a very old member of St. Andrew Kilwinning Lodge, of which he was a P.M., and he also held Grand Lodge rank. The deceased gentleman was for a great, many years a member of Trinity We sleyan Church, of which he was senior circuit steward. Few men were better known or more highly respected than Mr John. Stevenson, and the news of his death will be received with much regret. To the bereaved widow and fam- A ily (Mr Russell Stevenson and Mrs B H. R. Beauchamp) much sympathy will ® be extended.
