AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES. THIS AFTERNOON AND TO-NIGHT At the Opera House this afternoon, another o£ the popular Paramount matinees will be given, commencing at 2.30 p.m. “Thunderbolt Jack” will appear in the latest issue of this fascinating serial, and Charlie Chaplin is also on the bill, in addition to the star items. In the evening the programme will include some capital items. Alice Brady appears in “The New York Idea,” a story of wholly revolutionary and modern ideas, with the dressing above the usual. The second big offering on this bill is “The Lane That Had No Turning,” with a popular actress in the lead—Agnes Ayres, who is making such a big hilt in “The Sheik.” This programme will reign for to-night and Monday night, the box plan for which is now being booked up. “The Lane That Had No Turning” (featuring Agnes Ayres) is a piquant story, sure to please. Miss Alice Brady makes a big hit in “The New York Idea.” God ordained marriage, but man with his extraordinary faculty of “looking after himself,” bethought him of divorce. Then woman took the joy out of it for him by discovering the possibilities of alimony! That is a nutshell edition of the New York idea of marriage and divorce. In the exclusive circle of New York’s'

“four hundred” marriage is no longer held a sacred and binding contract, for divorce has appeared and made (he severing of the contract as simple as the joining. This simplification has made these serious institutions the play-ground for those who can afford them. In fact, it was some of these ultra smart folk who evolved the idea that to appear two seasons running with the same jewels, automobiles or husband was distinctly unfashionable. “The New York Idea” treats this subject in an interesting and novel manner, with Alice Brady and Lowell Sherman pourtraying a young couple who marry with the New York idea. The divorce and subsequent happenings make an absorbing story set in the colourful background, comprised mainly of the home of the “four hundred” and their surroundings. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights yet another double attraction is ou the bill These are; “The Mau of the Forest,” from the novel by Zana Grey, and “Miss Lulu Bett,” with a great cast—Lois Wilson, Milton Sills, Theodore Roberts, and Helen Ferguson The plan is now open at Jones, and in view of the numerous inquiries already being made for the reserved plan, seats should be obtained immediately.
