WANGANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Wanganui Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr T. B. Williams, and Crs. Green, Sharpe, Reardon, Oakley Browne, Gohns, Silk, Burgess, Richardson. and Luxford, The following reports were adopted: WORKS COMMITTEE. Mr Wilson of the W’anganui Furniture Manufacturing Co., was present, and asked that they be allowed to reinstate theh' factory, recently destroyed by fire, in wood and iron with a brick engine room. The Committee recommend, with a view to encouraging suburban industries, that the brick area in the suburbs be abolished. FINANCE COMMITTEE. Gas Engineer’s Report re extensions of mains to Puriri Street, Gonville, estimating the cost at £750. Gas engineer’s report on extensions of mains in the Borough and Suburbs required during the next two years: Gonville, including Puriri Street as above, £1 280; Aramoho 4 inch main from Railway Bridge, and reticulation in other streets, £1600; Wanganui East. £750; Wanganui £lOOO. Total, £4630. Stock of 3 and 4 inch mains in hand £7OO, approximate additional cost of £4,000. In addition, an average yearly expenditure of £2,000 will be required for melers and service pines. The above reports are presented to the Council and the Committee Recommends that consideration of same be held over until after the end of the financial year.

Gonville Town Board’s Agreement for lighting.—The-Commit'tee recommend that the borough solicitor be asked for his opinion as to the Council’s position under the agreement for the supply of gag to Gonville, as affected by the rights of the Power Board. Loan under the Local Bodies Finance Act. 1921. —The committee recomend tht Council to approve the proposal to raise a loan under the provisions of the above at for the purpose of pying off bank ovedraft as at 31st March. 1922, and temporary loans, and tht the Solicitor be instructed to 'take the necessary legal steps. The committee has passed payment for £1559 7/6 to Messrs. Richardson, McCable and Co., for the supply ot brakes, the same to be charged to the Tramway General Account. RESERVE COMMITTEE Fire Brigade Hall Tower.—-We recommend the adoption of the Borough Engineer’s recommendation to remove the tower. Application for use of Fire Brigade Ball.-—The committee recommend that Mr McKenzie be granted the use of the upstair room for. two hours! on Saturday afternoons during the pleasure of the Council at a rental of 10/. Tepid Baths.-—The committee has Instructed the engineer to prepare plans, estimated cost and other details relative to tepid baths and report to the committee within a month. New Zealand Forestry Department. —Tho engineer submitted a return of tree planting since 1913, and has been instructed to circulate same to the Council, and to forward a copy of the Fofesty Department. The committee has requested the chairman, borough engineer, and borough gardener to submit a scheme for further planting of streets, riverbanks, and reserves. Y.M.C.A. application for use of Coo.k’s Gardens. —The committee recommend that, provided no representative cricket match has been definitely arranged for Ist April, the Y.M.C.A. be granted the use of Cook’s Gardens for that date on the usual condition.

Tramway Picnic, Good Friday.—The Committee has received an enquiry., from the tramway men for the use of Cook’s Gardens for their annual picnic on Good Friday, and recommend that permission be granted. Top dressing of Cook’s Gardens. —Your committee recommends tnat the Borough Engineer be authorised to obtain the soil necessary for topdressing Cook’s Gardens. Peat Park.—We recommend that the Borougn Solicitor be consulted to ascertain if the trust could be varied In order that the Park could be put to general use as a reserve, without depriving the children of their rights. SARJEANT GALLERY COMMITTEE Picture “The Flight into Egypt.” —We recommend the Council to offer £125 for this picture, the amount collected for the purchase of same. Members ot Committee.—We recommend that Mr and Mrs J. A. (came be invited to seats on the ■ Gallery Committee. Sir Walter Buller’s Collection of Pictures. —The Committee recommend the Council’s 'to accept Mr ■lair’s offer to loan this collection if picture’s for showing in the Gallery for a period of six months. Mr A. C. Robertson’s Pictures.— We recommend the Council to agree to store these pio-tures in the Gal—ery at the owner’s risk. WORKS COMMITTEE. Dividing Ffence, Anzac Parade.—■ The Committee have instructed the borough engineer to this matter -'vent any likelihood of danger.. Draiftage No. 3 Line.—We recommend that this matter be left over until the' estimates are being <»nsidered. Reading Parkes EState. —The committee recommend the Council to approve of the preliminary plans as submitted, subject to the conditions of the Borough Engineer being compiled with, including laying of water pipe. Water Supply to Waitotara Council at Westmere. —We recommend that the county be supplied with water on the usual terms. Subdivision of Freeman Estates. The Committee recommend that the subdivision be approved, provided that if a building is erected on the eastern side, a brick dividing wall must be erected. Upper Wilson Street. —We recom v mend that the borough solicitor be instructed to take the necessary steps to insure this street being put

in order according to the Borough requirements.

TRAMWAY COMMITTEE. National Electrical Company.— The committe recommends: 1. That arrangements be made wi'ih the National Electrical and Engineering Company Limited for the supply of all additional electrical power plant and machinery that may be necessary of requisite in connection with the tramway and electric lighting proposals of the Counil. 2. That arrangements be made with the National Electrical and Engineering Company Limited for the erection and installation of all power plant and machinery already supplied by the company and all additional plant and machinery that may be purchased, ordered or procured from the company in terms of this recommendation.

3. That the borough solicitor be instructed to prepare all documents that may be necessary in connection with the purchase of such additional power plant and machinery and the erection of the same and jhe power plant and machinery already supplied. Sunday Fares.—lt is a. recommendation of the committee to the Council to revert to ordinary fares on Sundays but that concession tickets be not used. The committee report having requested Cr. Gohns to withdraw his resignation as a member of the committee. LIBRARY COMMITTEE. Wanganui County Council Subsidy.—ln view of the Wanganui Countly Council! withdrawing its subsidy of £25 to 'the library for the next year, the committee recommend that the concessions to sub. scribers residing in the County be withdrawn as from 31st inst. Funds for purchase of books.— The committee recommend that when the Council is framing the* estimates for the coming year, it provides for the same library rate as existing, viz., %d in the £, so as to enable more books to "be obtained for the continually increasing number of subscribers. Book Committee.—The committee has appointed Cr. Brown and Messrs T. Allison and J. H. Burnet, with the librarian, to be a book committee to select and purchase books for future use. Pictures for Library.— The committee report having received two large oil paintings presented by Mr A. A. Sherriff, and we recommend that the presentation be accepted and that the Council’s thanks be accorded to the donor. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Committee has considered communications from Mrs Neame, requiring the Council to take over the Bell Street property, at present occupied by het, in terms of t’m agreement. The committee recommend the Council to comply with her request. MISCELLANEOUS. It was recommended by the Tramways Committee to accept a tender from the Merewether Motor Cbmpany of £625 to supply a Denby motor truck.—The matter was referred back to the finance and tramways committtes in order to get further information. A letter from the St. John’s Hill Beautifying Society asking the Council to prohibit stock driving in Virginia Road and Parsons Street, was referred to the Works CommitAn application by the Hockey Association to use Cook’s Gardens during the winter was referred to the reserves committee.
