LOCAL ELECTIONS.

MR. T. B. WILLIAMS ELECTED MAYOR. MAJORITY OF 1075. SIX RETIRING COUNCILLORS RETURNED. The local elections were held yesterday in fine weather. As in former years the polling was slow in i the morning but brightened up con- ! siderably atrer midday, and thence to the closing hour there was a steady ■ stream of voters to the various poll- ! ing booths, where excellent arrangements were made to record the burgesses’ decisions. I Chief interest centred in the Mayoral election, and the supporters of both candidates worked very hard. THE MAYORALTY. The result of the Mayoral election was:— / T. B. Williams .. .. 2699 H. Oakley Browne .. 1631 Mr Williams had a majority of 1075 votes. During the early part of the evening a large number of people gathered at Maria Place and the result, of the Mayoral contest was announced with enthusiasm. MAYOR RETURNS THANKS. Speaking from the balcony of His Majesty’s Theatre, Mr Williams thanked the electors for their verdicts Wanganui’s interests were his interests, and he would endeavour to carry on the affairs of the Borough to keep men employed through the winter. He had not gone into the contest with any personal feelings. The verdict showed that the people were not unmindful of his past services. It was the last occasion he would ask them to elect him as Mayor. He hoped by the end of the term to show them that their faith in him was justified, (Cheers). The Mayor called for three cheers for Mr Oakley Browne, which were heartily given. Mr Browne also got a good reception. He said that he had achieved what he set out. to do —to arouse a civic spirit in the people. The interest in the election showed that the people did take an interest in their affairs. There was an old saying

“that the man with the smile was the man worth while,” and lie would continue to do his best for Wanganui. He was glad that Mr Williams had won on a straight-out contest. He thanked his supporters, his commute and Mr Burnett. It was said that he was a stranger, but he would be heard of again. (Cheers). Mr Browne then called for cheers for the Mayor and Mayoress, which were very heartily given. The analysis of the voting is:

Owing to the proportional representation system, it will be some time before 'the final result of the City Council election is known. The quota was 826, and on the first preference votes the polling was: Sullivan (Labour M.P.) 1880; Agar (citizens’ candidate) 1168; Rev. J. K. Archer (Labour) 999; Winston (Independent) 950; Flesher (Citizens) 841. Except Sullivan, none of the old Labour members of the Council secured the quota, and only one of them (Armstrong) looks to have a chance of election. Harbour Board.—On first preference the leading candidates are Holland. Thacker, Sorenson, Armstrong. Hospital Board. —On first preference the leading candidates are Rev. Archer, Mrs. Herbert and Dr. Fenwick. DUNEDIN. LABOUR TICKET BADLY DEFEATED. DUNEDIN, April 27. There were twenty-six candidates for twelve seats on the City Council. Twelve comprised a “citizen’s ticket,” seven were Labour and the remainder independent. The citizens’ ticket, which consisted principally of members of the old council, was returned en bloc with a lead of over a thousand votes over the thirteenth man, who was a member of the old council, but an independent. The Buller Hospital Board elections for the borough to-day, on proportional representation voting, the quota being 250, resulted—First count: Mrs. Paterson 322, A. C. Cotterell 255. Caldwell 227, Shanks 102, Fox 92. The first two are elected, but the third seat is still in doubt. Mr. Paterson is member of the Board as representative of the county, so that husband and wife are now both members of the Board. There were no elections for Mayor and Council, the number of candidates for each office only being nominated.
