notbs and comments. (By “Early Bird.") The New Zealand Trotting Cup will be run to-day. More racing at Riccarton ad Ellerslie to-morrow. Rose Queen finished well back in the Mitchelson Cup on Saturday. ; Weights fur the Feilding meeting are jiiuc to make their appearance on Saturday next. I That good sprinter Acre has been en- ! tered for tin Flying at Feilding. and Hie also remains in the Orona Stakes, I eignt-for-agc. on the second day. I At one of the recent Feilding meetings an enthusiastic follower of the sport—a man in blue-—commented on the fact that Taranaki horses always .do well at that fixture. There are ; Plenty of them engaged at the forthcoining gathering. I Manganui and district nominations for the Feilding meeting include Carmel Arch, Erin’'-; Isle. Simon, Crucelle, Rose Queen, Client, Malingerer. All Cerise, Amber Tips, Acre, Admyra, Oratress, Equitable , Listowel, Helen Rufus, Arrowfield. and Tempo—a strong representation. Marton entries are All Over, Ngata. Ruddy, and Kipling, with Mattock representing Bulls. Handicaps lor the Feilding meeting, lo be held on November 39 and December Ist, are due on the 1 :>th in.st., ami acceptances close at 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday week, 16th inst. A southern correspondent has the following to ;:y about tile New Zealand Cup race on Saturday last. The New Zealand Cup field comprised a well-con-ditioned iot, Kilrush being the only withdrawal. Oratress looked a picture, and was made w slightly better favourite than Imaribbon. Tentertield carried on the running for twelve furlongs, but was then challenged by Bonnie Jlaid, Bengeroop, Imaribbon. and Oratress. At the distance it looked like being a great race, but Oratress came on like a. trojan, and won in very convincing style, scoring a popular win. She was kept well back over the greater pai i of the journey, and responded well when called on. Vagabond made a bold bid six furlongs from home, but failed to sustain his effort. Bonnie Maid finished well, bui Royal Star was galloped , on. and Glen Canny was never danger- ! ous. LISTOWEL’S GREAT NORTHERN I G LINE AS. An Auckland Star writer has the following to say on the two principal races run ai Ellerslie on Saturday: Kight and Left and Strategy were the I late hour scratchings for the Great Northern Guineas, leaving half a dozen ’o line up for the ciasical event. Landslide was made a good odds on favourite. seven hundred pounds better fancied than Lucullan, which was nearly that amount better backed than Listowel with Geoffrey, Pukemaramara, and Lovelight supported in that order. They made a good show as they paraded, and though most attention was paid to Landslide. Lining up at the post Lovelight was next the rails with Landslide alongside of him. ami Lucullan, Listowel. Geoffrey. and Pukemaramara across the course in that order. They were a bit restless at the post, but the tapes Hew up to an even dispatch. Landslide began quickest to find his feet, but Geoffrey was soon alongside him, and the horses of the two brothers, trie Messrs Alison, raced side by side for the first five furlongs of the journey, but the field did not siring out to any extent, and they made a pretty sight as thev raced acros the top two by two. Geoffrey was first to give way, then Landslide shot out well clear, but Lucullan soon went alter him, while Robinson, who was riding a patient race on Listowel, gradually moved up on his mount. Lucullan failed to sustain his effort, but Listowel kept at it. and Landslide could not keep hini off. the Wanganui-owned roll winning a good race by a length. Lucullan got third four lengths away, with Geoffrey fourth. The winner is owned and was bred by Mr Geo. Currie, of the Koatanui Stud, and is by the successful imported horse Absurd from Lysistrata. This made the first sucess of Mr Geo. Currie in a classic event, his colours in races of this description being very unlucky*. In the Quensland Derby Common Law was only beaten by a nose, while last year his mare Rose Queen was very unlucky to be beaten in the Great Northern Oaks and St. Leger. The times for the various distances were: One furlong 13 4-55.. two furlongs 2.» 2-55.. three furlongs 36 3-55., four furlongs 49 3-o, five furlongs 1.2. VOLO’S first-class performance. Royal Abbey. Tama-a-roa and Windorah dropped out of the Mitchelson tup. the big event of the day. Volo finished up favourite in a good betting race, being entrusted with just on a thousand pounds more than Lord Kenilworth. with Tonopai, Uncle Ned, Demagogue, Some Boy 11., and Gold Kip all carrying over four figures. and Sir Ralph. Rose Queen. Woody Glen. Alteration, Bitholia. and Bezant fancied in that order. Some Boy 11. drew the rails, with Uncle Ned alongside of him. and Tinopai next. Bezant. Gold Kip, Woody Glen, Sir Ralph, Bitholia, Alteration, \ 010. Demagogue, Lord Kenilworth and Rose Queen across the course in that order. Tinopai and Uncle Ned gave a lot of trouble at the barrier, and there was a delay of eight minutes before they were let go. Demagogue moved first, but when they were fairly on their journey Some Boy IL was the pilot, then Lord Kenilworth ran up to him and the pair set the pace in company, but did not get very far away, for Gold Kip, \ do, Bitholia and Tinopai were always well placed. Lord Kenilworth was beaten at the end of a mile, and Some Boy 11. was left to enter the straight alone. Tinopai went to him at the distance. but did not sustain her effort, and Some Boy IT. drew out again, only to see Volo come at him with a late run. Gradually he got to the Auckland horse, but Some Boy 11. stuck to his task and a couple of strides from the post looked as if lie would keep his opponent off. The top weight, however, would not be denied, and in a great finish just got his head in front as they flashed past the post, a head decision going in his favour. Tinopai got third, a length and a-lialf away, just in front of the fast finishing Uncle Ned, which came from a long way back, after being badly placed in the early stages. Volo was responsible for a first-class performance under his 9.2. for the field he defeated was a good handicap one. His finishing effort was very fine. Some Boy 11. ran a good race, for he was out forcing the pace all the way, and it was only in the last stride that V’olo headed ‘J’ni. Tinopai just failed to see it out but Uncle Ned was going on faster than anything else at the finish, but the big disappointments were Lord Kenilworth and Demagogue, both of which faded out ol it when the real struggle commenced.
