A FURTHER EXPLANATION.
To the Editor. Sir,—Since the “Dead March” paragraph appeared in your paper I have heard strange things about the opinions I am considered by some people to hold. I have never given utterance to any such opinions, nor do I hold them, and I am rather surprised that people attach so much importance to the matter. So may I say once again that the playing of the “Dead March" as a voluntary occurred without my knowledge; that it had no significance whatsoever; that it had nothing to do with MeSwiney or anybody else. Also, I made no reference to MeSwiney at any time in any sermon or address, and never i bought of doing so. Also, that I had no sympathy with the suicide of MeSwiney. Also, that I am not a Sinn Feiner, nor do I believe in Sinn Feinism; and I do not want to see an independent Irish Republic. I am a firm believer in the British Commonwalth of Nations as a means to the League of All Humanity, and I want to see every British nation possessing what is known as Dominion Home Rule. I want even' England to have this. And finally, I am not a Papist and have no leanings to Rome; but I am a sound English churchman, and I believe thoroughly in that part of the church in which I belong. And I don’t believe in suspicion, prejudice, and religious bitterness; but I love peace and quietness, and try 4o cultivate the Christian virtue of charity,—l am, etc., EDWARD P. MAXTED. St. Laurence Church, Aramoho, Nov. 6, 1920.
