THE PROHIBITION STRUGGLE.
POLLING IN GLASGOW. TEMPERANCE ADVOCATES HOPEFUL. -LONDON, Nov. 2. Great interest is being taken in the Glasgow local option polling to-day. Vigorous propaganda was carried on right up to the eve of the voting. The public houses are closed in the thirty-seven wards taking the poll. Temperance advocates expect success in nine. The results will be announced to-morrow. A great struggle for prohibition has been going on in Scotland for some time. The 1912 Temperance Act, the operation of which was postponed until 1920, is similar to the Ne\v Zealand measure, and submits the issues of continuance, reduction, or prohibition to the electors, a bare majority carried the latter. The country is swarming with American “pussyfooters” and temperance “diehards,” while whisky and beer propagandists have been stumping the country, scattering countless leaflets from aeroplanes, and spending much money. The drys are strongly organised and have been making a special effort to capture Glasgow and other big towns.
