EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
EXEMPTION FROM RATING. At a meeting of the Borough Council last night a letter was received from Mr T. Lloyd, with the contention that the property formerly known as the Alexander Estate, now controlled by the Roman Catholic authorities, would now be exempted from rating, seeing that it was in use for educational purposes. The Mayor said the point had to be decided when they could get exemption from rating for more than one school.
Cr. J. Donaldson considered that the rating of private schools should be taken up by all the municipalities as at present it was an injustice. The Mayor was of the opinion that if people were willing to maintain schools up to the Government requirements at their own expense they should not be taxed. Cr. Donaldson considered if people had a kink it should not be at the expense of the rest. The Mayor said it was a doubleedged sword. They might think that it was the other people who had the kin’ . The matter was referred to the Borough Solicitor.
