NEW COAL FIND.

REPORTED AT WHAKATANE. The Auckland Star’s Whakatane correspondent writes: Further particulars of the discovery of coal in the Whakatane district are now available. It appears that there are two discoveries. In one case a seam of coal in a face of hard rock has been found fairly close to Whakatane; in the other a seam of lignite in soft, friable face has been found near Waimana, where for some time past there have been rumours of other discoveries of coal In the hills in that locality. Those who made the discoveries are apt to consider the find of lignite more valuable than the find of coal, as they are of opinion that the lignite will lead to a seam of hard coal, which would also pr ibably be in soft rock, and therefore able to be mined at much less cost than the coal in the hard rock. Moreover, the lignite is adjacent, to the river road, and on the prospective route of the East Coast railway, obviating transport difficulties. On the other hand, the other seam, although much nearer Whakatane, is in an isolated position. It is understood that the discoverers have applied for rights over areas including the seams, and a report on samples is to be obtained.
