AMUSEMENTS MEETINGS, ETC.

I Ills MAJESTY’S. ' I A programme well above the aver-1 age was again presented at His j Majesty's Theatre last evening. The star feature, “Code of the Yukon,” | is a Select, with Mitchell Lewis in the leading role. CHARLES SMYTHE AND HIS “MUSICAL MAIDS.” COMING TO HIS MAJESTY’S. Charles Smythe, the eminent Australian basso, will appear under special engagement for the first time in Zealand, Cor four nights, commencing next Friday, at His Majesty’s Thearte, in conjunction with the feature film, “Stronger Vow." Mr Smythe is said to have experienced a career of success practically un-i eclipsed in the annals of the stage. i A native or Sydney, he achieved im-, mediate fame on making his debut at the London Palace Theatre, and i subsequently appeared with triurn- ■ phal effect as Mephistopheles In i “Faust,” with the Dame Melba. Mad-! ante Calve., and Alice Esty Grand ! Opera Companies, Mr Smythe, who ; is now in the zenith of his vocal pos- j sibilities, is reported to be gifted | with a voice of rare quality, power,i and flexibility, which he uses with I infinite artistic grace. His offerings I will include the “Prologue" from “I I Pagliacci.” “Up from Somerset,” ! “The Drum Major,’ “The Floral Dance.” and “Captain Mac.’ Mr ! Smythe will be assisted by his Merry Musical Maids, including Miss Bathie Stuart, who will make a welcome reappearance after a tremendously successful tour of the Dominion. NEW WILLIAMSON VENTURE. ! GRAND OPERA SEASON. Once again the J. C. Williamson i firm is sponsoring grand opera, in i New Zealand. On Wednesday even- ’ ing next, and the following Thurs-1 day, the organisation will visit Wanganui and give performances of I Puccini’s fascinating and absorbing I opera “La Boheme,” and Offenbach’s melodious work. “Tales of Hoffman.” I The casts will include the artists I who won such commendation during ; the recent highly successful seasons I in Wellington, Dunedin and Christ-1 church. They are Miss Amy Castles, j Miss Eileen Castles. Miss Patti Russell, Miss Thelma Carter, Miss Elsy I Treweek. Mr Walter Wheatley. Mr I Ralph Errolle, Mr Alfredo Valenti. Mr Carl Formes, Mr Fred Collier, and Mr Tom Minogue. In the seasons of remarkable success achieved by the Williamson grand opera in the southern centres of the Dominion it would perhaps be invidious to at. . tempt, distinguishing as to the re. spective merits of the list of triumphal productions. Be as it may. itl is said that those who witnessed the staging of “La Boheme” and “Tales of Hoffman” were practically unanimous that, if not worthy of first place, none of the other pieces could bo conscientiously placed in that position. While each of the other operas has attractions peculiarly their own the operas to be presented here are quique in embracing many of the best features of the others and taken altogether, will provide an entertainment the all-round excellence of which cannot be questioned. The music, the acting, the scenery, and the general effects are said to be such as to make up shows of outstanding attractiveness. The box plans will open at Messrs H. I. Jones and Son's next Friday morning.

The annual garden party of the ,Presbyterian Missionary Union will be held at the Park. Marton., on Wednesday. 25th inst.

Poultry, pigeon, and cage bird fanciers are reminded of the meeting to be held to-night (Wednesday) in Duigan’s Rooms.
