Mr V. R. Cooke has been appointed local manager for the Westport Coal Co., and arrived in Wanganui last week to relieve Mr Jack, the company's branch inspector. Mr Jack, who has been acting here for some time, resumes his former duties.

The'many friends in this district of Mr Walter Chamberlain will regret to hear of his death, which took place at Hastings on Saturday night. The late Mr Chamberlain was a compositor by trade, and was a member of this journal in the old hand-set-ting days, when his fine manly qualities endeared him to a large circle of friends.

A London cable announces the death of Viscount Astor, at the age of 71 years. He was born in New York, his father being John Jacob Astor. He became a barrister in 1875 and was a member of the Legislature of the Slate of New 'York from 1878 to 1881. He was United States Minister to Italy 1882 — 1888, and became a naturalised British subject in 1899. His heir is the Hon. Waldorf Astor, M.P. for Plymouth since 1911, and owner of the Observer.
