AUSTRALIANS' TOUR OF N.Z.
A FINANCIAL LOSS
(Per United Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, Sept. 22
Referring to the tour, Mr Upton, one of the managers of the Australian team, said that from a financial point of view the tour would not be a success. The Australian League would probably lose about £850. This was somewhat different from the result of the New Zealand tour in Australia recently, which showed a profit to the New Zealand League of over £1000.
Mr Upton considered that New Zealand had some very promising players, in fact some of the teams he had seen contained better material than the combination which represented New Zealand in Australia a few months ago. Asked how he accounted for the defeat in the second test match at Christchurch, <Mr Upton said that the ground was greasy. This was a great handicap to the Australians, the New Zealanders being superior in a wet weather game. Further, the referee in this match interpreted the rules in a manner the Australians were not accustomed to.
He advocated the appointment of referees for important games by the New Zealand Council, not by local Leagues.
