THOUSAND-POUND WAR MEMORIALS.

In connection with the Trentham Dominion Scholarships Art Union, tte Committee is developing another scheme which has already met witn some success. The scheme is to secure donations from wealthy indivi^ duals and associations for the purpose of educating a number of children and establishing them in professions. The Hawke's Bay War Relief Association has made a deftnita * promise, with the Minister's appro- * val, to pay the cost of the Continuation, studies o't five children with a [limit of £5000. Appeals are being | made to various quarters for similar donations on the ba.sis of £1000 per child. It is contended that to take a child of a soldier'who has sacrificed his life for the Empire and to educate that child, paying his or hoi fees, board and all living expenses, is to institute a memorial far more enduring than any of stone or bronze. The scheme is to be open to the whole Dominion and the children will be selected on an c.bsolute--ly fair basis, without favour. The Hawke's Bay Province has already given £6000 in prizes to the Art Union ,and with this additional £5000 to the new scheme, besides the splendi dwork put in by a number of pro* minent Hawke's Bay residents, this province has set a splendid lead for the whole Dominion. Dr. Riddell is just now putting in some strenuous work on behalf of the soldiers' children and is pushing this scheme vigorously.
