WASTED SHIPPING SPACE

A cablegram published this week stated that a number of steamers iiad left for Australia in ballast owing to the difficulty of obtaining frights. The position is similar to a degree with regard to New Zea.land in that freight space in outwardbound steamers is not used to the fullest extent. It is not that the goods are not required so much a3 that orders cannot be filled. Of course retailers have been buying from hand to mouth since the armistice, waiting and hoping for the fall in prices that is slow in coming. But there are some lines—notably machinery and cotton goods for which orders have been placed for years. These it appears must wait their turn as manufacturers are busy supplying markets nearer home where the needs are, possibly, more urgent still.
