SURPRISING ADVANCE BY ANGLO-BELGIANS.
FIVE TO EIGHT MILES ON
25 MILE FRONT.
A WONDERFUL TWO DAYS.
(Received Oct 1, 7.4 5 p.m.)
LONDON, Oct 1
The Anglo-Belgian advance on the Flanders front of 25 miles has now reached a general depth of five miles, though it is eight miles at the sharpest point. In two days we have gained twice the ground taken in the Messines and Passchendaele offensives from1 June to November of last year. This suggests some insufficiency of fighting power in the German army. The advance is a serious thrust against the whole system of communications affecting the Belgian coast. The railway between Roulers and Menin is the main connection between Lille and the Ostend front. It is thus now useless for railways. Eight main roads meet at Roulers, and swampy ground make the building of Iresh military roads impossible.
