LONDON, April 10. The French are retiring to Ailette

FRENCH STANDING *FIRM.

FIERCE FIGHTING AT HANGARS

LONDON, April 10. A French evening communique states that the enemy during the night carried out local actions at several points. They last evening, after strong artillery preparations, powerfully attacked in the region of Hangard en Santerre. There was obstinate fighting for the village, which changed hands repeatedly.

Our attack at 3 o'clock in the morning gave us complete mastery of the village and cemetery. An attempt to drive us from the wood west of Castel was sanguinarily defeated.
