GERMAN ELEPHANTS STRIKE.
The proverbial intelligence of the elephant lias once again been illustrated in Berlin, where a herd of them were taken from comfortable quarter at the Zoo and placed in- teams for street duty. The elephants, although restive under new harness, appeared to fall into their new positions with stoical resignation, as if recognising that m war times u.ne cannot pick an-1 choose the cla,ss of labour. The Commissioner of the Stables, however, undertook to try the elephants with a new menu, at which the beasts at once dissented. They chafed under their tasks, one or two,--absolute-ly refusing in budge despite the barbarous lashings that they received Now, on the plea that the inclemency of the weather forbids the elephants continuing their services to the municipahty, they have been returned to the custody of the City Zoo, where they spend most of their time sleeping and eating what rations their old masters can afford. The elephant "strike" has been a success.
