THE LATE MR. WALTER TAYLOR
PCLPIT REFERENCE.
memorial service for the late Mr. W. Taylor was held in the Wanganui East Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening last. Hymnfi, prayers sind sermon were appropriate to the occasion. The choir sang an anthem, " The Home Land."
The following reference was made by the minister. Rev G. W. Blair: "We mourn the loss of our friend and brother, but we sorrow not as others who have no hope, for w e know that he is gone to be with Christ, in the Home where no sorrow can enter, and death w tor ever unknown. The late Mr. Taylor was born at Bombay, India m thy year ' 1845. His father was Mr. Walter Taylor, at oitt, timo accountant in the Bank of Bombay, but who, with his family, emigrated to New Zealand, settled in Wanganui, and started a newspaper (the "Wanganui Times"), of which he was both proprietor and editor up to within two years of his death in 1872.
"The late Mr Taylor had resided for a considerable number of years at Marton. He was a Maori War veteran, having taken part in the last Maori War. He came to Wangamii East about ten years ago, and during all that period he took an active interest in our church work, as a member of our Management Committee. He was a man of integrity and uprightness of character, and was a keen temperance worker, and an ardent supporter of the No-License movement.
"He leaves a widow and thirteen children (four sons and nine daughters), most of whom are married, and well settled in life. We tender to all our sineero and heartfelt sympathy in their sorrow, and we commend them to Him who is the God of a.U comfort— the husband of the widow and the Father of the fatherless.,
" Our friend and brother is not lost— \\& is only gone before —'Till the day break and the shadows flee away.' And so we can sing as we go on —
' Be still, my soul, when dearest friends depart. And fill is darkness in the vale of tears, Then shalt thou better know His love— His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy frars; Bo still, my soul, thy Jesus can repay From His own fulness, all He takes away.' "
