MARIST BROTHERS' SCHOOL

Tho Very Rev. Dean Holley presidio, at the distribution ■of prizes at the ifarist Brothers' School yesterday morning. The Rev. Father Ma honey uas alsoi in attendance. The Director., Br. Basil, in welcoming the Dean, said that the conduct of the boys, during tu-j 2 ear was very satisfactory. Th'ay took a keen interest in their religious studies, and were regular and punctual the performanca of their religion*, duties. Their, secular studies produced good results. The two scholarships of St. Patrick's College, Wellington, were saeured by the pupils. H. McDonald won the Sacred Heart College (Auckland) Scholarship, and added to his other successes a Junior National Scholarship. He and L. Corney passed the Junior Civil Service, and were allotted Senior Free Places. In football, the boys were again successful, retaining for another year, tho Senior School Shield and the Trimen Challenge Cup The Reverend Dean, in congratulating the boys on their succ-asscs, mental, moral and physical, said among other things that the school had, the distinction of producing a scholar, who caused much correspondence, agitation, and comment, right through the Dominion. A Bill was -passed through Parliament which was understood to allow' Catholic ehildrsu, who won National Scholarships, to attend Catholic Secondary Schools, to avail themselves of them On H. McDonald's applying to have his made available at the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, the Minister of Education refused-to grant the "boarding allowance ' which Parliament enacted should b« allowed. On being inter-v;-ewod by the secretary of the Catholic Federation, h e based his refusal on ths. word "obliged" in the Act, saying, thboy was not obliged to go away from home, sinca there was a Secondary, t'chool ju Wangauui. But, as Catholic toys, for conscientious reasons, refuse t-; go to Jion-Catholic secondary schools, McDonald was obliged to go to Auckland for his secondary education, the Minister persisting in his refusal to grant tlin boarding allowance, which Act provides for winners of National Scholarships. Th» Dean expressed th« hope that when the Catholic Federation had made the public aware of the Grievances and injustice under which tho Catholics were labouring in this and oth3" matters, a sense of justics would be eventually awakened, which would prepare the way for legislation, that would wipe away the hardships which, in the matter of education, "-'s the lot of Catholics at the present time.
