AMERICA AND THE WAR.
SIR D. MAWSON'S IMPRESSIONS
SYDNEY, May '5. Sir Douglas Mawson says that many American youths are fighting with the Allies. Their parents sent them to England and France to be educated, and when the call came they enlisted. He met prominent German-Americans who denounced Germany for provoking the Avar. The President's critics excused his attitude on the ground of hi.s great abhorrence for war. He considers it a crime for any nation to fight, and is determined to keep the United States out of the war whatever happens. Sir Douglas Mawson added that President Wilson was trying to avoid the internal trouble which would inevitably arise if America sided outright with the Allies. Mr. Roosevelt would accept the consequences in a moment.
