At an important meeting last night of the Palmerston North Club, formerly the Men's Social Club, the Rev H. G. Ro'"her presiding, it was unanimously decided to purchase another billiard table, and £100 was subscribed in the room towards that purpose. - When the Town Ckrk of 'Marlon made ' applcation to t^e "State Advances Office for a loan of £5000 for improvements to roads, etc., it was at a time when mocey was scarce, and the department ' had little cash to work on. The term asked for was reduced to 15 years, but since then the Advances Office has been more flush, and now the loan has been provisionally approved. The, Council, however, is now anxious to have the loan period extended to 36£ years at tHie rate of 4f per sent., and an effort is being made to have the amount cf the loan and period granted accordingly. Some time ago reference was made in the "-Chronicle" to the unsightly poles that W3re being erected in High St. at Marton by the Telegraph Department. The Borough Council also took tho matter'up, with the result that tiho local body has received word "chat as scon as can be arranged a stalF will' .arrive to take down the unsightly poles and place the wires underground. At the Marton Bbro-uhg Council last night the sum of £10 was voted towards the Members Fund of the Fire Brigade, ths object being to finance tho team attending the Association demonstrations.

Mr Wilde ha* put a notice of motion as follows to be discussed at the next meeting of.the Marton Borough Council : That the borough engage a working foreman to supervise the roads maintenance and men.
