SHOCKING AFFAIR IN AUCKLAND
FATHER CUTS HIS DAUGHTER'S THROAT.
ACT COMMITTED IN STREET
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 19. A shocking alfair occurred in Be resford Street this afternoon when a girl named Evelyn Tynan Kad her throat CTjt severely, her father being immediately arrested on a charge of atteniptcd murder. The child was at onc,e ..aken to the hospital in a critical •condition. A .sitting of the Court was subsequently held at the hospital before Mr. E. Page, S.M., when the^ depositions of tho little girl were taken in the presence of her lather. There were also present Inspector McGrath, Chef Detective McMahon and Dr. Maguire (superintendeat of the hospital). William Tynan was then charged by Inspector McGrath with having wilfully attempted to murder his daughter Evelyn by cutting hey threat with a razor 3 to which the accused roplicd, " t believe I did." The girl, who was sufficiently stinmlAlcd to understand and answer questions 3>ut to her by the Inspector, said she had cove out of school and walked up BeresforJ Street with another girl. When they reached Day Street corner she was suddenly hit by someone, whom she could not see, and who she thought was swearing loudly." Then she caught sight of h«r father with a lazor in his hand. He was cutting her head off with .it. When she felt her throat and arm. paining; her, she managed to escape from her attacker's clutched and ran up to a lady who lived in a <house near by. Th<i next thing she remembered was that she was in a cab. She recognised he-* father.
Accused was then permitted to crossexamine witness >and asked. "Why did you not speak to me when I was down last week?" Witness: "I did speak to you." The °;irl said she "did not 'call him i, drunkard, and she did not kiss him because she snicK liquor on him. Tho girl said did not call Mux a drunkard, and she did.not kiss him because she smelt liquor on .him. Tins concluded the inquiry, and accused was remanded for <a week.
