BOWLING.
ST. JOHN'S TOUBIXG PARTY
(By Our Special Reporter). I The New Plymouth Club were the next on the list to try conclusions with, the touring team from the St. John's Club. The morning broke fine and pro- J mised a, glorious day, but about start- ( ing-time heavy looking olouds began to . make their oppearanee and during the progress of the game there were sev- J eral showers which, caused play to cease ' on two occasions. The green, although. ( a. shade on the heavy side was, as ( usual, m good order. The visitors were defeated by 28 points, Gellatly's rink [ ■ being the only one to score a win, and his victory was a well-earned one. A. K. Smart and Simpson had a ding dong' go, but the New Plymouth crack man- ; aged to get home by" two. Glasgow and Moit'ett had uphill fights to play and the scores hardly indicate the play. The visitors were, as usual, hospitably entertained. Tne speeches of welcome and response were made by the two presidents on behalf of their respective clubs, and the St. John's party eontri- ( buted their bowling chorus with appreciable success. Bain fell dur- j ing the progress of the game making bowling rather a difficult problem. Fitz- ] roy ran up 19 points, Glasgow being the cnly St. John' rink to score a win. ! Armstrong was well up prior to the tea adjournment but there was either some- ' thing in the "seaside air" or in the tea which didn't agree with his men, | for he did not add to his score until the ] last head and the end sa-v him two down. Tho St. John's party left New Plymoutih by the mail tram yesterday morning en route to Hawera. Tho weather in the early morning was not very promising, but after Egmont was left in tha rear the bright sunshine was encountered. The conditions for the remainder of the day were all thai could bo desired. The green was in firstclass order and was by far the keenest of the tour. A very enioyable cup of tea was found all ready for the party on arrival at the green, and, J needless to say, after the early breakfast was very much appreciate-1. The usual speeches of welcome and thanks were made by Messrs Parkinson and Sampson, followed by the Choir's chorus,, which Trent with a swing that would have done justice to a Liedertafel. The Hawera dub proved far too strong for the visitors, and won both games very easily. The rinks lunched together at Keene's restaurant and before leaving the cheering cup of tea was liberally dispensed. Hearty cheers were exchanged and thus ended a most enjoyablo game. Easter come round again soon was the wish expressed by every cne of the party. In the train Mr. Sampson, on behalf of tho tourists, presented the popular secretary (Mr. G. G. Simpson) with a case of pipes in recognition of his untiring energies in promoting and conducting the business arrangements of the tour in such an able manner. Mr. Simpson suitably replied and hoped that he would be able to go on many more tours with the Club. ■-
