BERLIN, Mar. 22. A court-martial at Metz sentenced Lieut. Yon Lavalette St. George to 2^ years' confinement in a fortress and dismissal from the army, for killing Lieut. Haage in ia duel on the 2nd of February. Tlie court was of opinion that defendant caused the duel by grievously insulting Haage's family honour. An Imperial Bill has been introduced to allow betting on horse racing only, and the licensing of bookmakers operating in places approved by the police. A tax wll be levied on book bete, as is the case with the totalisator, which, continues to be authorised.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Mar. 22.. There is a financial crisis in Brazil. The European purse-strings have been pulled tighter, and money is being hoarded to an astonishing extent. Ihe banks hold only twenty per cent of the currency in circulation, calculated at 26 millions sterling, which is literally locked up in boxes. Firms importing safes and strong-boxes are unable to meet the demand.
