COMPETITIONS AND ENTERTAINMENTS
In various parts of the grounds interesting competitions were in progress throughout the day. Messrs Gilberd and Paterson were most pushing in their ef-
forts to dispose of "a ton of black diamonds for a bob." The coal was donated by Mr Mathison, of the Westport Coal Company. There was also a weight - judging competition for a cake donated by Mr W. S. Dustin. Mr Thomas was keen in selling tickets for an art union, the prize being a beautiful oil painting, "The Banks of the Ouse, "which was presented by the artist, Mr G. Sheritf. This will be raffled on April 6th. One of the most humorous of the side-shows was "Spiasho," a scheme placed into operation by Mr Cannell and vigorously pushed by Mr G. J. Fama. Mr R. Bond was at home in canvassing for competitors in " tossing the sheaf." His venture brought in much cash. The competition was won by Mr F. McOullock. Over fifty tried their reckoning powers in, "stepping the chain,'.' iand it was left to Mr Inia, of Raorikia, to win, with Mr J. G. Meyer, of YVaverley, second. Other attractions were the shooting gallery, Messrs W. Carr and Cowley; bowling competition. Mr J. P. Williamson; skittle alley, Messrs A. Elder and B. Willis. Among the entertainments were the photographic baby show, in sole charge of Mrs Percy Wooton; the Maypole dance, Mrs Connopj, with little girls (this dance was charmingly done); fortune-telling tent; sleight-of-hand exhibition, by Mr Clark; Punch and Judy, by Mr A. Thompson, etc.
The children were given a splendid time. For them there was » host of attractions. There was the motor railway, managed by Messrs. McMillan, Hope Gibbons, T. E. Thomas, and Young. Messrs Haase, Hanton and Conohie were responsible for the successful carrying out of a series of children's races. A good miamy boys took part in pillow-fighting on a beami. Mr. Westbrook was in charge. Many children enjoyed a good chase and romp with a number of fancy-costumed and fun-laying men. In' the Home Industries shed a delightful comedy in two acts, entitled "Semi-Detached," was staged) by Messrs Melville and Davis. The entertainment attracted a good number, and was most amusing.
