OBITUARY.

MR' H J. TURNER.

It is- with much regret that we have to announce the death of Mr H. J. Turner, who passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday morning. The deceased gentleman's health had not been good for some time; but he had been able to conduct business affairs as usual, and his death came as a distinct shock to a wide circle of friends. The late Mr Turner, who was particularly well known in Wanganui, was a native of Buckinghamshire, England. He came to New Zealand at the age of 20 yeans, taking up his residence in the North Island. He played his part in the fighting against the Maoris, going through the last Waikato campaign. At the conclusion of the fighting Mr Turner took up farming, which he followed for many years. About 15 years ago he oame to Wanganui and commenced business as a cycle dealer. This business he worked up, with the assistance of his eons, to its present solid dimensions. In addition to his ordinary business, Mr Turner was an ardent supporter of everything that might tend towards the improvement of the Dominion, tand in this connection he was a shareholder of various industries, as well as being a prominent promoter of building societies. Mr Turner took a keen interest in Jlocal and general politics, and at the time of his death was a member of the Gonville-Castlecliff Tramway Boardl, while he had also served a term on the Gonville Town Board: The late Mr. Turner was a great student of economics, and held very advanced views, particularly in regard to banking and currency. TSe deceased gentleman was ia thoroughly straightforward' and honourable gentleman.~~who was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and his death will bo widely deplored. A widow and two sons and five daughters axe, left to mourn their loss. To them we extend our sincere sympathy. The funeral will take place at four o'clock this afternoon. The deceased was ia Freemason of many years' standing, and ■was one of the original members of Lodge Moutoa, Gonville, and will be buried with Masonic honours.
