OPEN SEA SWIMMING RAGE
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, March. 22. A novelty swimming event, so far as Wellington is concerned, took place on Saturday afternoon, when 13 started in an open sea race from Rona Bay wharf to Way's Bay wharf, a distance of between three-quarters and one mile. A strong cold southerly made the sea very choppy, but ten competitors finished. V. J. Wise, 6min 20sec handicap, won in 22.40; L. Butler (4.40) second; and M. Jenkinson (1.40) third. The scratch man, H. Newman," made the best time, 19min 4secs. The "swimmers went with the wind, so that the times were thus considerably better than expected in cold and broken water.
