Prebendary Carlisle, head of the Church Army's prison gate work, was going to Buckingham Palace, when he was stopped at the.gates- by an ex-pick-pocket (now reclaimed), who asked Prehendary Carlisle to show the King a Post Office bank-book containing £128. The King heartily commended the work of the Army, saying: "I feel the greatest sympathy for those who have made a slip' in life and are now, without means or characters, working their way back to good citizenship."
