LUCKY PATEA.
THE HARBOUR EMPOWERING BILL. " EMINENTLY SUCCESSFUL." IS IT CUT AND DRIED? The following from the "Patea Press", speaks for itself :— The chairman of the Patea Harbour Board,.Mr. A. T. Christensen, and Mr. F. W. Grainger, returned from We.lljington by the mail train on Saturday ■ afternoon. "We understand that their mission in connection with the. Harbour Empowering Bill was eminently successful, thanks in no small degree to the efforts of the member for Patea. Mr. G. V. Peafce, M.P., on their behalf. It appears that the Local Bills' Committee in a 'matter such as the Harbour Bill about to be considered are guided in* ,the first place with regjardj to' its technical, foatu res by the engineer-in- . chief of the Dominion. Some misconception apparently existed in the minds of the authorities with regard to the intentions of the Board as to the works in connection with the harbour improvement scheme^ and had the matter not been successfully explained it is more than probable that the Bill would ■ have been • aolverselv reported on by the Engineer-in-Chief, with the result that it would have been killed.
Th^s Chairman and Mr. Grainger were successful in obtaining o. lengthy' interview, with. Mr. R. W. Holmes. En-/nheeivin-Chief, and. explained in detail /the views of the Board with regard to the improvement of the port, with the result that the'public can Tely on obtaining the assistance of the Marine Department in the passage of the-Bill through the House. In the absence of any unforeseen circumstances the passing of the Bill should before long be an accomplished fact.
