A deputation from the Racing Glut* [details of which appear elsewhere) having been dealt with, the Prime Minister listened attentively to the request of the Batea Harbour Board, that the Government would favourably consider a Bill, which Had for its object an. increase in the rating area-in order that a loan might bo obtained to provide the requisite mqney to establish a safe port in all weathers. The representations of the. Board were lucidly placed before the Brim© Minister by Mr Christensen, Chairman o f the Harbour Board, and Mr. Bearce, Member for tho District. It was shown' that; the trade of the .-port was increasing by .teaps and bounds, but the trouble was that when westerly -winds prevailed -the bar mas. unworkable. It was also de~ • s^red to deepen the harbour by an additional three or four feet. ' . Mr. Massey said that this was a simp!.e'!matter from the Government's .point of view.- He was pleased to notice from the tables of exports that the port of Patea bad become one of very considerable importance. If the Oovernment, could assist the people of the distriot, it would be very .pleased at having the privilege. At the same time he wished to a note of warning 'I?"
