RANGITIKEI NOTES.

FEILDING AND BABIES

A POPULAR LANDLORD

STATUTORY HALF-HOLIDAY AT

MANGAWEKA

NEW BUILDINGS FOR BT7LLS

(From our Own Correspondent.)

MARTON, Jan. 31. Feilding keeps up its reputation for babies, and during the past month 16 births were registered. There was only one marriage. Three deaths were recorded.

Mr and Mrs W. Ferguson, of Kakariki, gave ia garden party on Wednesday in honour of Mr and Mrs J. B. Purkiss, who are returning to South Africa after a splendid holiday in New Zealand. About one hundred guests were present. Mr Piwkiss was formerly a resident of Halcombe, and is now in the South African railway service.

Mr H. McM-anaway, who lias meritoriously earned popularity as a publican, has taken over the Club Hotel at Marton, and in an announcement in another column he guarantees that the1 house is absolutely "free," and that Speight's beer only is kept on draught. This morning, while workmen were engaged making an asphalt lawn at the residence of Mr J. H. Miles, Wanganui Road, the tar pot boiled over and caught fire. Volumes of dense smoke ascended, and when the fire alarm was given, people thought that another serious outbreak had occurred. The fence caught fire, though, little damage was done.

Mangaweka Town Board itas deckled to retain Thursday as the statutory half-holiday.

Bulls is likely to show considerable advancement this year. It is stated that the Bank of New Zealand has secured the site in High St. lately occupied "by Messrs Gampion and Green, with the object of erecting new banking premises in brick. The old Clifton Hotsl is to be replaced with new premises, and, sphinx-like, a handsome 6hop will be built for Mr Broughton on the ashes of the building recently destroyed.

'Mrs Beren, who is leaving Bulls, was farewelled by her numerous friends, and presented with a valuable traveilingbag.
