BUNEDIN, October 31. Captain Ruxton, of the Union Companys' steamer Kaiapoi, was charged with proceeding to sea without a. full crow, in that he was a fireman short ou the voyage from Lyttelton to Westport, and from Westport to Dunedin. The facts admitted were that a fireman had deserted at Lyttelton, and the captain and chief engineer had scoured Westport in an endeavour to find a substitute, with the result that they only heard of two drunken men, and neither vvas located. The Magistrate held that tho captain had used every reasonable eftort, and would not inflict any penalty. .■•■■' J r

SLY GROG SELLER CONVICTED.

WELLINGTON, October 30. William Savage was convicted at the Magistrate's Court to-day and fined £25 for sly-grog selling. Ho pleaded guilty. H. F. O'Leary, who appeared for him, asked that, in "fixing tho punishment, His Worship would take into consideration the fact that the accused wa<j a married man and had never been in a court of criminal jurisdiction bofore. Dr. McArthur, S.M., said the defendant must have known quite well what ho was doing. Such people were continually coming before the court and ho could not sco fit to impose a light penalty.
