Tho •weather, which sometimes plays hnvoc with tho opening days of the show, was cold at times, but rain hung olf till evening set in, and prospects do not look too bright for the big to-mor-row among tho cattle and horses. The attendance to-day was not large. THE JUDGING. lh-a schedule arrangements went oft' like clockwork, and tho judging was well up to time. THE ENTRIES. Tho entries are as follows:— Competitions 270 Horses (including 85 draughts) ... 280 Cattlo 354 Sheep 314 V}z* 53 Dogs 632 Photography 105 Art and Schools 850 Needlework 278 Homo Industries 317 Total 3453 THE CATTLE SECTION. Of course chief interest, to dairymen is centred in tho cattlo section, and'hero thero is a marked increase on other years, particularly in Shorthorns, which number -13 as compared with 2o at tho previous show. Mr. W. T. Williams. To Ante, has no fewer than 21 exhibits, and Mr. W. Howard Booth, of Carterton, another well known breeder, has a good showing. Messrs. O. F. Moore fKni Iwi), E. Short (Parorangi). and C. A. J. Levett (Kiwitea) are the chief exhibitors of Herefords. Tho entries of North Devons are- confined to Mr. W. J. Birch, of Marton. Ayrshires show an increase of 19, and tho class is- well supported by the Porirua Mental Hospital and Mr. J. Kyle, of Aokautere. In Ilio light of an occasionally vigorous controversy it is worth while noting that whilo Jerseys have, risen by three entries, Hokteins hovo gono up by 25. Tho Jerseys are well distributed as to origin, and .some of tho entries come from as far away as Thames. In Holstpins, Mr. \\ r. I. Lovelock (Friesland Park) and Mr. Newton King (Now Plymouth) are among tho more- prominent exhibitors. Tho Weraroa State Farm has a special exhibit of ten pure-bred HoLsteins, most of which are si rod by Sir Do Kol Inka .Pietete. Ordinary dairy and fat cattlo .nro again good '•I n=>rs. and thero ar-a ten in for tho Champion butter-fat competition. SHEEP. The best class in sheop is that of tha Romneys, with 125 exhibits, tho bulk of which is from tho Wairarapa. Mr. W. Perry, of Mastorton. has nominated tho majority of Lincolns, which total 16. Thero p.ro four entries of flee^o wool and similar number of scoured wool. DRAUGHT HORSES. Draught horso classes possess special interest this time, by reason of a first .appearance at Palmerston of ji soTithorn ■ xhibitor, Mes-rs.
