TAIHAPE NOTES.

'From Our Own Correspondent.)

A very successful bazaar in aid of the building fund of the Presbyterian Church and manse was brought to a conclusion on Saturday. It is anticipated that about £100 will be cleared, which must be very gratifying to the promoters and thoso who put in so much unselfish labour. Tho bazaar was opened by the Mayor (Mr. A. Nathan), who soecially mentioned the services rendered b-" Mrs. Owens, who was indefatigable in collecting plain and fancy needlework, of which there was an excellent display. Mr. A. McColl, sen., also went to a great deal of trouble, and spent much labour in the collection of goods for the produce stall. It said much for tho generosity of the fanners and settlers who so handsomely contributed towards this stall. Mr. Lyndon is also deserving of thanks for the donation of a live sheep for weight judging. The Municipal Band provided a good programme of music each night the bazaar was running. The following were the stall-holders other than those already mentioned: —Plain work, Mrs. Cole ; fancy work. Mrs. Butler, Mrs. Lyndon ; gents' stall. Miss Catherwood ;* dolls. Miss McColl: lollies, Misses Harvey and Mary McColl; flowers, Misses Archer and M. McColl; fish pond and bran tub, Miss Ina McColl; refreshments, Mrs. Hair, Mrs. Peters. Miss Gilbert, and assistants ; art gallery, Mrs. Neagle ; shooting, Rev. Catherwood and Mr. W. McLennan. Mr. McLennan displayed ■a great amount of zeal and energy* in getting entries for the competitions, and mado a thorough success of this important branch of the function. Mrs. Owens acted as superintendent of the bazaar, and it is mainly diie to her efforts, both beforo and during the propress of the function, that it was such a pronounced success. A pleasing featuro of all functions held in Taihape for tho raisins: of church funds is the*manner in which ladies and gentlemen of all creeds join in giving each other the helping hand. It is hoped that this spirit will always continue. The opening of the Taihape Baths, which was to have been held on Monday afternoon, has been postponed to a futuro date. A meeting of the club called for Friday night failed to draw a quorum, as also did the meeting called by the secretary of tho Athletic Club. However, thoso present decided to adjourn for convivial purposes, and a pleasant evening was spent, tho only incident which marred the pleasure of the evening being the over-zeal of a prominent member in showing his wrestling abilities. Mr. McLeod, who has produced several good wrestlers in tho district, promised to take him in charge, and it is hoped our embryo wrestler will be figuring on the mat at tho New lears sports. If so he can bo assured of a very popular hearing. Mr. W. Pardine, who had the misfortune to lose the use of one hand through a gun accident some time back, has been appointed custodian of the Public Baths Mr. W. Kelsall left by the Main Trunk express on Friday for Auckland, where ho will bo married, and afterwards take tip residence at Taihape. Ho was given an enthusiastic farewell at the station by a large number of his friends Captain Sutherland presided at the annual meeting of the Taihapo Fire Jingade. Tho report and balance sheet showed a credit balance of £7 4s. lid. \ ho following office-bearers were elected tor tho ensuing year:—Captain, Gco Sutherland; lieutenant, C. Cribb ; foreman, b. Shergold; secretary and treasurer, C Cribb; caretaker, J. W. Strudwick; branchmon. F. O. Driscoll, S Reid and W. Adair.

Mr. Potts will not tako u» msidenco in Taihapo again, his place on tho lank staff being filled by Mr Goldsmith. * '
