LABOUR DAY CELEBRATIONS.

Yesterday was a glorious day for the holiday. This was indeed fortunate for tho celebrations in WanganuY, the principal of which was the monster sports gathering on tho ideal sports ground, Cook's Gardens. In the early part of tho sports, the sun shono fiercely, but in tho afternoon a light breeze sprang up, and tempered the atmosphere so as to mako everything delightful. The ground and slopes were dotted thickly all over with picnickers, who appeared to bo making the mest of the fine day. A first-class sport* prog'ranTme had been drawn up, and with good entries, a most successful day, as far as the athletic portion was concerned, has to be recorded. Tho attendance must have been a record for a sports meeting in Wanfranui. many thousands being present. Tho officials;, and particularly tho secretary Mr. Geo. McKay, aro to he heartiiv congratulated on the undoubted success of tho gathering, which proved to "be tho most successful held in this town for somo years. Many novelty item<? u-fM-o introduced into the sports, and this was a prominent factor which made tho sneeta+ors enjoy the sports immensely. It is now hoped that the committee's intent'on to mnke this gathering an annual affair will be carr^d out, and it is pretty safo to say that but few of thoKo present yesterday will be absent when the next snorts eathcring under th« ausnices of the Wnngnnui T.il.n-ir T>iv Celebrations Committeo will bo held.
