LIGHT RAILWAYS.
THE ROADING QUESTION
POSITION AT WAVEKLEY AND
NORTHWARDS
(By our Travelling Reporter.) MARTON, Oct. 26
The question of light railways is being advocated a good deal lately, particularly in those districts where a line of light rails would serve the purpose of transport in a way no road could do. There are many places where gravel and stone are very scarce, and have to be carted long distances, making the cost excessively heavy. Not only does the metal cost an excessive price but the wear of the roads with such a dead load as metal is enormous, and in a long stretch of road the cost of irepaiiing the jroad oyor wMch the metal has been carted is of very -Material consequence, and adds furthe" to the cost of construction. The "Farmers' Union Advocate." m emphasising the advantages of light railways, cites Waverley and northwards as an instance of a district where metal is very scarce. At present it i 6 being forwarded over the Government lino from a- pit belonging to !the RangjLtikei county at Ohingait, through Wanganui and on to the Waverley district, nearly one hundred miles, because this is the nearest source of supply. It would be much nearer to get the metal from the Government quarry on Mount Egmont, but the line is not complete yet, nor will the supply be available for local bodies for some time yet.
