ST. JOHN'S CLUB

If there is one day inoro than another which bowlers. IpaJ> forward to it is the "Opening Day:" c -GonviUe and Wanganui Clubs had their preliminary cantier, iand the St. «F6hh'6 lneiiibers had arranged to commence operations on Saturday last, but unfortunately tlu> rain on Friday night and on Saturday morning had made '.playing an impossibility, and in consequence the "Opening Day" of the St. John'sites was not the usual gay gathering which has characterised tho club's previous openings. However, although it was known play >VaVimpossible, still a fairly large crowd assembled at the pavilion,-.and shortly beforo three, o'eloc^ -Mr. {■}. W. Samp•sbn.'^ho president, of the club, addressed 'tho -gathjewriag, expressing regret that the weather had spoilt ■ what no doubt would have been an enjoyable afternoon. In. the absenco of Mrs. Sampson the president asked Mrs. Simpson, .wife of tho hon. secretary, to throw the jack, which feat was successfully accomplished amidst applause. Mr. Sampson then declared the season well and truly open, cd. Some of the more ardent enthusiasts had a roll up on the small green, but they found bowling in wintry weather was notf, very congenial pastime, and soon cried *'ehoueih.!' Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies present, and altogether in spite of the drawbacks those present spent a pleasant couple or" hours together. The green is looking remarkably well in spite of the continuous rain during the" past week or two, and gives every promise of being a vast improvement on previous years". Caretaker Watson^deserves every credit .for-tho excellent work he has already performed both on the greens and surroundings. The small green, which is to bo reserved for the ladies, is looking in tip-top order, and the lady members of tho club should derive heaps of pleasure "from this popular pastime during the coming summer. It is proposed to hold » tournament amongst tho members today, and play will commence at 10-30 a.m.
