THE GONVILLE BEAUTIFYING

SOCIETY

RECORD OF YEAR'S WORK

(To the Editor)

Sir, —Tho Queen's Drive from Carlton Avenue to the Hospital gates, which wag overgrown with weeds and grass, has been turned into a beauty spot; it has been dug over and between 30 and 40 loads of soil and several loads of manure carted on to it. This was necessary before the planting could be dono with success, as the soil was all poor hungry sand. It was then levelled off and numbers of flower beds of different designs made, several of them have been planted and half a dozen more will bo planted as soon as the plants are large enough. A gravel walk will run through the centre, and the spaces between the flower beds will be sown with lawn grass. The western wire fence has been threaded with broom as a shelter for the flowers. Numbers of trees have been planted, such as Horse Chestnut, Flowering Ash 3 Scarlet Oaks, Flowering Gums, Acacias, and Veronicas. "In a few years' time this should look very pretty, tho fence all round the road being planted with an ornamental hedge (Oleara Posterrii). Gonville Avenue, Cams Avenue, and King's Avenue have beoa planted on the south side with 170 trees, 33 feet apart with varieties such as Acers Negundi, English Oaks, American Oaks, English Ash, American Ash, Flowering Ash, English Alders. Chestnuts, Limes, Tulip Trees, Cercis Silaquastrum, twelve different varieties. All are dieiduoug trees and some of them have very handsome flowers in the spring, and lovely foliage through the summer and autumn months. The local nurserymen, Messrs. J. Laird and Sons, arid W. T. Benefield and Sons, have the thanks of the Beautifying Society for the very liberal way they met tho Society in the price of the trees, <aha for their donations of trees to the Society. This has enabled the Society to plant a great many more than they would otherwise have been able to plant. The Gonville Town Board has also assisted the Society to a very large extent in carting soil and protecting the trees with a frame, for which the Society, on behalf of the residents of Gonville, thanks them. It now devolves on the residents to- guard and look after tho trees as much as possible, as it is to thoir interest to look after thoir own property, for such it is, and report to tho police any one found damaging or destroying any of tho trees or flowers. Tho Recreation Ground has been fenced round tho south and western sides by the Town Board, and tho Society have planted 500 trees as a breakwind round the «ame and the triangle corner at Alma Road. They have planted trees such as A bices, Flax, Bamboos, and others. The Society are indebted to Mr. R. Walker and Mr. John Handley. for donations of trees and plants. This is a very good beginning for tho first year's work of the Society. I would like to point out just here that wo would like to meet the ladies of Gonville district, to $cc what arrangements can be made in connection with ■ the Garden Fotrc to bo held on New Year's day. The .meeting will be ono nieht next week at the Hall, the data is not yet fixed, but our secretary will announce it later on. —I am, etc. ; W. T. BF.NFFTELD. j
