PROPOSED BACON FACTORY
BUILDING SOCIETY
WEATHER
(From our own Correspondent.) MARION, Oct. 26
The proposal was .recently mooted at a meeting of ttie Feilding Chamber of Commerce that a bacon factory should be established at Cheltenham, attached to the butter factory. The directors of the Cheltenham Co-opera-tive Butter Factory are, it is stated, willing to fall in' with any such scheme, provided they are not asked to tako any financial" risk. As showing the opening there is for a bacon factory,, it is stated that one farmer at Cheltenham last year sent away £300 worth of pigs. Ine annual nieetiii. i the Feilding Permanent Building and Investment Society was held on Friday afternoon, Mr VV. A. L. Bailey presiding over an attendance of about a dozen shareholders. The chairman congratulated the shareholders on the result of the year's work. Messrs W. L. Bailey and W. Carthew were re-elected to the directorate, and Mr G. O'Halloran was reappointed auditor. The directors' honorarium was fixed at the same figure as last year. The manager's salary was increased by £2-5 a year, references in tho highest- terms being made regarding his work.
The weather, ever a topic, gave people something to talk seriously about to-day. It was simply atrocious. In addition to the gale, heavy fails of snow are reported up the Main Trunk. A telegram from Krewhon, Moawhango, which is 2500 ft about sea level, reads: " Heavy snow last night, seven inches on lawn, still going strong." From four to six inches of snow fell last night in tho Cheltenham, Waituna and Kimbolton districts. The weather is bitterly cold. Continuous rams throughout the spring have hindered ploughing operations, and many farmers have not yet been able to make a start.
