WORKERS' DWELLINGS.

NEW BUILDINGS AT TERRACE

END

LIGHT AND. EASY PAYMENTS

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

PALMERSTON N., Oct. 25

Considerable interest is being manifested in the erection of workers' dwellings at Terrace End under the Act of 1910. The first of the new houses were approved by the architect on Monday last. They are of neat appearance, though not, perhaps, overburdened with architectural embellishment. They may be built, under the regulations, of wood, concrete or brick, as arranged between the Board and the applicant. The house under -review was of wood, heart of rimu and matai being used. Besides a bathroom and a scullery, there are five rooms, comprising two bedrooms, a dining room, sitting room and kitchen. The last-named room is fitted with linen cupboard and other useful devices. The scullery adjoining contains a boiler and wash-tubs, inset. There are .such necessities as hot and cold water, while each house has a sewer connection.

There is enough room .at the settlement for 130 such houses. The purchase of these dwellings is effected on tho instalment system. For every £100 owing at the commencement of tho arrrecmont, £3 10s is payable every halfyejacl These instalments comprise 7 per cent, of the total sum owing -at the commencement of the agreement. Of this amount 5 per cent, is charged for interest, while- the balance goe« to pay off the principal. As a result, the amount of interest payable diminishes every half-year, while the amount paid off the principal •correspondingly increases. In 2o| years the balance of the principal will havo been paid off, and the tenant will be the owner of the house and section.

'Millar Street is at present under formation, and when completed will have a junction with Limerick Street, running in a northerly direction from Fitzroy Street, as well as Main Street, as previously mentioned.
