NAPIER-GISBORNE RAILWAY.

MINISTER REPLIES TO DEPUTATION.

(United Press Association. —Copyright.)

WELLINGTON, Oct. 25

A deputation from Napier and Hastings Chambers of Commerce waited on tho Minister for Public Works to-day and (fexpreesed great concern at the cessation of tho work on the Napier end of the Napier-Gisborne railway. The Minister said that he regretted he had to face the position of reducing the railway votes, but roads and bridges werp more important. Nb less than 23 separate sections of railway are under construction, and it would be necessary to curtail the expenditure on a considerable number. Napier had not been singled out for any special attack, as expenditure was being stopped on at least ten lines. There was nothing else for it, as the money is not available, and if there, was any delay in raising it, tho work coald not go on.
