PICKING THE BALL TO SCORE
IS MACARTNEY'S JUDGMENT AT FAULT?
FREMANTLE, Oct. 16. During the course of an article on 'th.e'Ttour of 'Gsfcgjory'.s toanfl, J\. S. Hutcheon (the ex-Queensland cricketer) in tho "British Australasian" says:— "Macartney must now bo regarded as having thoroughly established himself as one of the dozen of the greatest batsmen in the history of the game in Australia. To designate him another Trumper, however, is in my opinion to put him in quite a false position, though if the pit-cJi bo of the billiard table variety, foe probably deserves to be classed even with tho old champion, but on difficult wickets he ha.s to go a very long way yet before showing comparative skill or judgment. Perhaps it would be more correct to say that tho essential difference between tho two players is that Macartney attempts his good wicket ehots when ho ball is turning a foot, and quickly. When McLaren pointed out one phase of this fault some time ago, Macartney replied : " But I've seen you do that shot yourself." Whether Macartney will /y^tet deserve fto occupy first place with Trumper is a question for the future to decide. With his two international double centuries, to
